Richard Phillips built "Woodlands" the
first
house on the site in 1791. Major General
George Warde purchased Clyne estate
in 1800 for £1800, adding the castellations
and naming it "Woodlands Castle"
William Graham Vivian - the millionaire of
Clyne purchased it in 1860 and renamed it
"Clyne Castle".The Castle and grounds are now
owned by the University College of Swansea.
Within Clyne`s 50 acres can be found a very varied
selection of bird life, including Tree Creepers, Nuthatchers, Green
Woodpeckers, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Flycatchers and Warblers.
Clyne has around 2000 different plants (including 800 rhododendrons,
many of which are unique to the gardens), a Japanese Bridge surrounded
by Japanese Acers, vegetable, herb, bog, rock and ornamental gardens,
A rose terrace and bandstand.
